Healer / Shielder

In general, all teams will usually require either one of these. These supports focus on keeping your entire team alive by providing healing or by preventing DMG with their shields.

Healing characters are self-explanatory. These characters have the ability to regenerate the health of other characters in the party. Sustained Healing refers to healing your characters over a period of time while Burst Healing heals a large amount of health in a single instance. Some healing abilities only heal the active character that is on the field while others can heal the entire party.

Shielding characters are those that have the ability to create a shield to absorb DMG from enemy attacks. Shields can be created from Elemental Skills or Elemental Bursts as well as Crystallize Elemental Reactions. The amount of DMG a shield can prevent is dependent on the stats and talent level of the skill that creates it. Some of the shields that are created by certain characters can have other effects such as debuffing or dealing DMG when close to enemies. Characters protected by shields also cannot be staggered or knocked back from enemy attacks.

Most shields in the game are a supplement to healing and cannot be solely relied on to keep your party alive. Zhongli is one exception where his shield can be made so strong when properly geared that a dedicated Healer may not be necessary at all.

Crystallize (Geo + Any Element except Anemo) is a type of Elemental Reaction that create a elemental shard on the field that can be be picked up to create a shield. The Geo character's Elemental Mastery and Level affect the DMG the shield can absorb.

Characters that can heal or shield

All Geo characters can generate shields through Crystallize reactions. Only Geo characters that can create shields on demand with their Elemental Skill or Elemental Burst are listed here.
